RIO DE JANEIRO — The U.S. Olympic Committee says Ryan Lochte and three other American swimmers were robbed by armed men who stopped their taxi.

USOC spokesman Patrick Sandusky says Lochte and the others left the French Olympic team's hospitality house early Sunday in a taxi headed for the athletes village, hours after the last night of Olympic swimming.

Sandusky says the four swimmers are "safe and cooperating with authorities."

USA Today and Fox Sports Australia first reported the news, citing Lochte's mother, Ileana Lochte.

Ileana Lochte and his agent did not immediately return phone calls and text messages from The Associated Press.

Lochte swam in two events at the Rio Games, winning gold in the 4x200-meter freestyle relay.

After six straight years of rising sales, the party may be ending soon for U.S. automakers.

Sales of the Calumet Region-made Ford Explorer plunged by 22 percent to 16,615 in July, down from 21,361 the previous July. Total Ford sales fell 3 percent to 216,479 in July, while the Dearborn, Mich.-based automaker missed analyst estimates by 8 cents per share in the second quarter.

“Trucks and vans continue to be market strengths for Ford,” said Mark LaNeve, Ford vice president, U.S. marketing, sales and service. “Van customers rewarded us with another strong year-over-year gain, and F-Series had its best retail sales this year.”

Locally, Ford makes the Explorer, the Taurus, the Police Interceptor Utility and the Police Interceptor Sedan at the Chicago Assembly Plant at 126th Street and Torrence Avenue in Hegewisch.

Police Interceptor Sedan sales rose by 5.8 percent in July, while Police Interceptor Utility sales skyrocketed by 27.6 percent. Those niche vehicles however do far less volume than the mass-market Explorer and Taurus, which posted a 44.3 percent decline in July.

So far this year, Taurus sales are down 8.8 percent and Police Interceptor Sedan sales are down 6.7 percent. Explorer sales have sagged by 1.5 percent, though Police Interceptor Utility sales have surged by 29.7 percent.

Ford has sold 19,347 Police Interceptor Utility SUVs and 128,952 Explorers through the first seven months of the year.

Investigators say the man who was shot and killed in the Wrightwood on Saturday night was the son of Chicago Police officer.

Arshell Dennis III came home from college to surprise his sick mother for her birthday when neighbors say a gunman walked up and started shooting.

The incident occurred at a home near 82nd Street and Sacramento, according to police.

Dennis, a graduate of Urban Prep, was studying journalism and in his junior year at St. John's University in New York City. He was supposed to go back to school on Sunday.

The Dennis family released the following statement on Sunday: "Our family is deeply saddened by this tragic and senseless shooting. The loss of our son is stunning and painful. Trey was a junior in college at Saint John's University, majoring in journalism. Tragically, we were going to take him to airport today at 3 p.m. to return to school. Now because of this senseless violence, we will be grieving and planning his funeral. Trey was smart, funny, and the light of our lives. We ask for privacy at this time as we collect ourselves and deal with this stunning loss."

Neighbors say people were celebrating a birthday when the gunman walked up and started shooting.

"I knew it was gunshots and I was thinking, just like everybody else thinking now. Everybody is scared... my neighbor came out very upset, crying," said Carol, a neighbor.

According to a CPD spokesperson, Supt. Eddie Johnson spoke with Officer Arshell (Chico) Dennis on Sunday morning.

"As always, the men and women of the CPD will stop at nothing to find who was responsible and bring a sense of closure and justice to Officer Dennis and all of families affected by violence," said Supt. Johnson in a statement. "But in order to address the root of this violence, we must change the way the criminal justice system treats the reckless, repeat gun offenders who are causing this violence and send a clear message that when you are involved in gun crimes you will be held accountable."

Police say another man was in serious condition after the shooting. No one has been arrested.

Now there is a ban on any news or stories or tweets regarding the writer Nahid Hattar, who has been jailed for posting a cartoon on Facebook.  As I mentioned yesterday,  I can't stand the man and there is bitter ideological conflict between us: he is a vulgar champion of the Jordanian and the Syrian regime and wrote racist stuff against Syrian people and is known in Jordan for his anti-Palestinian stances.  But if the Jordanian regime was not pro-Israel/pro-US, Western media and Western human rights organizations would be all over this story.
