“Trucks and vans continue to be market strengths for Ford,” said Mark LaNeve, Ford vice president, U.S. marketing, sales and service. “Van customers rewarded us with another strong year-over-year gain, and F-Series had its best retail sales this year.”
Locally, Ford makes the Explorer, the Taurus, the Police Interceptor Utility and the Police Interceptor Sedan at the Chicago Assembly Plant at 126th Street and Torrence Avenue in Hegewisch.
Police Interceptor Sedan sales rose by 5.8 percent in July, while Police Interceptor Utility sales skyrocketed by 27.6 percent. Those niche vehicles however do far less volume than the mass-market Explorer and Taurus, which posted a 44.3 percent decline in July.
So far this year, Taurus sales are down 8.8 percent and Police Interceptor Sedan sales are down 6.7 percent. Explorer sales have sagged by 1.5 percent, though Police Interceptor Utility sales have surged by 29.7 percent.
Ford has sold 19,347 Police Interceptor Utility SUVs and 128,952 Explorers through the first seven months of the year.
