The Dallas Cowboys have been denied permission by the NFL to wear a helmet decal honoring the Dallas Police Department and the city as a whole — in the wake of the July ambush on officers in downtown Dallas.
The Dallas Morning News reported Wednesday that the league permitted the decals in training camp and practice, but rejected the Cowboys’ request to wear them during preseason and regular season games.
“Everyone has to be uniform with the league and the other 31 teams,” said Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones, son of owner Jerry Jones. “We respect their decision.”
Earlier in training camp, the Morning News quotes Stephen Jones as saying this:
There are so many wonderful, wonderful causes, the league has to be careful…If you allow one, then what do you do about every team that has a great reason to have something on their helmets?…There are tons of things out there that need to be recognized. Once you open that Pandora’s box, how do you ever stop?
But Pandora’s box has already been opened. The NFL allowed the New York Jets, New York Giants, and New England Patriots to wear a decal honoring the victims of the tragedy in Newtown in 2012. And they allowed the Pittsburgh Steelers to wear one honoring their legendary head coach Chuck Noll in 2014.
The Cowboys, sans decals, will open the preseason on Saturday against the Los Angeles Rams.

Five men were killed in three separate shootings between 6 p.m. Friday and 3 a.m. Saturday, according to Milwaukee police and the Milwaukee County Medical examiner's office.

The first incident left one man dead near the intersection of Sherman Ave. and Burleigh St., according to the Medical Examiner's office. The victim was driving south on Sherman Ave. when he was shot, Milwaukee police said. His vehicle crashed into another vehicle, causing minor injuries to the occupants.

Early Saturday morning, a little after 1 a.m. at 23rd St. and State St., a 21-year-old man and 23-year-old man, were shot in a robbery-related shooting. One died at the scene and the other at a hospital, according to authorities. There are no suspects in custody at this point.

At about 3 a.m., four people were shot during an altercation in a parking lot outside a tavern on W. Fond du Lac Ave. near Townsend St. Two of the victims, a 34-year-old man and 36-year-old man, have died. The other two, a 26-year-old woman and 30-year-old man, are both in stable condition at a hospital. No one is in custody in this incident, police said.

There have now been 81 homicides in the city this year, compared to 95 at the same time last year, according to preliminary Milwaukee Journal Sentinel data. The 81 deaths only account for those classified as homicides under the FBI's Uniform Crime Report. Another seven killings have been reported, but they do not fall under the Uniform Crime Report homicide definition.

A fourth shooting in the city resulted in two men being hospitalized with non-fatal injuries. A 23-year-old and a 25-year-old were shot at about 9:30 p.m. Friday near W. North Ave. and N. 34th St., police said. The motive for the shooting is unknown, and there are no suspects in custody, police said.

A 6-year-old boy beat his newborn sister to death after their 62-year-old mother left her young children alone in a car for more than a half hour while she went to get her cellphone fixed, authorities on Florida's Gulf Coast said.

Now the mother, Kathleen Marie Steele, is charged with aggravated manslaughter of a child.

Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gulatieri said she went to a cellphone repair business in St. Petersburg on Monday and left her children in the car — the infant, a 3-year-old and a 6-year-old.

While Steele was gone, the baby began crying and the 6-year-old began beating her to make her stop, the sheriff said.

"He was tossing that baby around like a rag doll," the sheriff said during a press conference Thursday, shortly after Steele was arrested.

Nevertheless, "The mistake is with the adult, Kathleen Steele, not a 6-year-old boy," the sheriff said.

Gulatieri said the boy won't face criminal charges. His mother, who lives in the St. Petersburg area, made her first court appearance Friday, saying only that she understood the charges. Her two sons have been placed in therapeutic foster care. Her attorney Robert Love said he wouldn't contest the state's order for Steele to have no contact with children 18 or younger.

A 6 -year-old colored girl who was shot in the head while playing with water balloons on a hot summer day was expected to be back home Sunday, her aunt said.

Zariah Muhammad underwent a nearly two-hour surgery at Comer Children's Hospital on Friday, the day after the shooting, said her aunt, Najah Muhammad. The procedure went well, Muhammad said she was told.

Zariah was in good spirits before going into surgery, with her one request being a trip to Chuck E. Cheese upon her return home, her aunt said.

A day earlier, a bullet fractured Zariah's skull outside her grandmother's home in the 6800 block of South Calumet Avenue in the Park Manor neighborhood on the South Side. The girl was playing with water balloons with an uncle, David McCray, and other children when a man approached and asked McCray if he knew a particular person, Muhammad said.
