At Least We Now Know Where Clinton Stands And It Sure Isn't With Law Enforcement

Democratic presidential candidate, Hillary Clinton, has confirmed what many of you have long suspected - she is not a friend of law enforcement.  Last Friday, the Clinton campaign informed the National Fraternal Order of Police that Clinton would not be completing the FOP's list of questions for presidential candidates and would not be seeking the FOP's endorsement.  Outraged by this brash political move, FOP President Chuck Canterbury responded immediately.  His message was one of shock and disbelieve, especially coming just after police officers were assassinated in Dallas and Baton Rouge.

Clinton's actions appear to be a cold and calculated effort to win the presidency at any cost or any deed.  Look at this as only a Clinton political strategy.  At first, this high handed rejection of law enforcement appears to be a gaffe, but it is not.  Today, political endorsements do little to get votes from members of endorsing organizations.  Organizations cannot deliver the votes of their members.  The FOP has this problem, along with every other organization.  Even the Tea Party has this problem.  However, endorsements are not free.  They have a price - the votes of members who do not agree with the endorsement - the backlash.

Clinton is more concerned about not pissing - off Leslie McFadden than not pissing - off Chuck Canterbury.  Sad, but true.  Even with mistakes and questionable practices, there is no denying the goals and efforts of law enforcement are to keep all of us safe - black or white.  Law enforcement is the only thing standing between us and the barbarians.  Law enforcement even protects the barbarians from the barbarians.  While I have sympathy for Leslie McFadden concerning the loss of her son, I cannot condone or ignore the "burn this bitch down" reaction.

It is well known in Washington circles that the Clintons are for the Clintons.  This latest action just validates those opinions.  It is not too late for Clinton to reverse her position on this issue, but I doubt if she will.  She would have to be convinced there would be a net gain of votes.  The problem is not just with Clinton.  Such, win at any cost, tactics are not beneath Trump, but he has supported law enforcement throughout the campaign.  Jerry Flynn and his New England PBA and their early endorsement of Trump have played a big role in Trump's attitude toward law enforcement.

Perhaps, the time has come for law enforcement to move to the Republican Party, even with Ted Cruz and the Tea Party.  Most of you vote Republican now.  It is amazing how police officers vote based on law and order, rather than their pay check.  The Democratic Party is quickly becoming the anti-police department party, and they have every right to do that.  The Republicans are currently hell bent on starving law enforcement budgets in the name of fiscal responsibility.  Lately, the Democrats are slashing police budgets just as aggressively as Republicans.

There are three months until the election.  Law enforcement needs to decide quickly and unequivocally who to support even if it the loser.  Both Democrats and Republicans need to decide where they stand and recognize the consequences of their stands.  Forget about Gary Johnson as a potential third party winner.  Ten minutes of research will cause any rational police officer to reject him.

A couple of Daily Southtown readers want to know why Moraine Valley Community College restricts enrollment in some classes to blacks only.

"While helping my son register for college at Moraine Valley Community College, we noticed that the required course College 101 has two sections limited to African-American students," one Speak Out participant observed. "He wants to know why there are not two sections limited to Asian-American students? How about Native American students?"

Another reader sent me a copy of course listings. Sure enough, for the one-credit-hour, fall semester course, "College: Changes, Challenges, Choice," there's a note that registration for some sections is "limited to African-American students."

The course meets for eight weeks. Students get together for nearly two hours per session in a discussion/lecture format. All full-time students at the Palos Hills-based school are required to take the course their first year, said Jessica Crotty, the college's assistant director of communications.

NORWOOD PARK — For the Cali family, it has been difficult to watch the news lately.

At every mention of the eight officers in Baton Rouge and Dallas who died in July after being targeted because of the uniforms they wore, Neva Cali remembers hearing the doorbell ring on May 20, 1975 and knowing that something terrible had happened to her husband, Joseph Cali, a Chicago Police officer assigned to patrol the Henry Horner Homes on the Near West Side.

"That moment is frozen in time for me," Neva Cali said, struggling to hold back tears. "The fallen officers bring it all back. I always feel what that widow feels."

U.S. Olympic swimmer Lilly King took exception to a cocky finger-wag by Russian competitor Yulia Efimova, telling NBC after her 100-meter breaststroke competition that Efimova was a cheater and she was “not a fan.”

Cameras caught the 19-year-old King looking disdainfully at a TV monitor showing Efimova wagging her finger defiantly after winning her semifinal event with a time of 1 minute, 5.72 seconds. King wagged her finger back at the monitor, then went out and promptly swam a 1:05.70 to take the No. 1 seed heading into Monday night’s medal competition.

Efimova was banned last month from the Olympics as part of the Russian state-sponsored doping scandal, and previously in her career was suspended for more than a year for doping. She was reinstated to the Olympic competition at the last minute, however, and she was greeted by boos before and after her race on Sunday.

King, who mocked the Russian by waving her finger with a smile as she got out of the pool, did not like Efimova’s show of bravado.

“You know, you’re shaking your finger No. 1, and you’ve been caught for drug cheating,” King said. “I’m just not a fan. You know, going to swim my heart out for USA, and hopefully that turns out the best.”
King said she was not pleased with her time, but she said she was happy to be the top seed and would go for a time of 1:04 in the final.
So what was the result tonight?

Lilly King made her point.

The American beat Yulia Efimova in the 100-meter breaststroke — and set an Olympic record, too — a night after she called out the Russian for bragging after failing a drug test.
Efimova was .57 seconds behind King, who finished in 1 minute, 4.93 seconds. American Katie Meili won bronze[…]

King’s victory made a statement, too. Asked if she thought the win made a statement to Efimova, King said: “I hope I did, that we can still compete clean. … That’s how it should be.”
