A retired NYPD detective shot his two adult sons before killing himself during a party in their Long Island home, police said on Monday.

Irvin Noak, 61, was arguing with relatives at his Foxglove Circle home in Bellport when his two sons intervened at about 11:10 p.m. on Sunday, Suffolk County Police said.

That's when Noak grabbed a handgun from his bedroom, came back and shot his sons Irvin Noak III, 30, and Aaron Noak, 22. He then turned the gun on himself, police said.

Emergency responders rushed all three men to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital. The victims were listed in critical condition but the former detective could not be saved, police said.

It was not immediately clear what spurred the initial argument. No other relatives were wounded in the shooting, police said.

Milwaukee police Chief Ed Flynn on Monday lauded faith and community leaders for curbing violence Sunday night during unrest after the police shooting of a black man on Saturday.

“I saw in many instances people preaching on street corners, counseling small groups of individuals. A number of individuals spoke at the vigil, which easily could have been an excuse to incite, but rather there were consistent calls for calm, discussion and peaceful change,” Flynn said.

Flynn confirmed, however, a significant level of violence toward police. In addition to the well-documented rock-throwing by Sunday night’s mob, officers have also been met with gunfire since a police-involved shooting sparked outrage.

"It certainly appears there are people who are willing to shoot at (police) without concern of whether they injure or kill them," Flynn said. "… We do have people who are recklessly firing firearms generally, and clearly some of them are firing at police."

Chicago households reeling from massive hikes in property-tax bills and the specter of new utility-tax increases have yet another burden to bear – even higher pension debt from the city’s four pension funds.

According to the 2015 actuarial reports of Chicago’s police, fire, municipal and laborers pension funds, the city’s total pension debt grew by two-thirds in one year. Chicagoans are now on the hook for $34 billion in city-run pension debt – or $33,000 per city household. That doesn’t include billions in additional debt Chicagoans owe to Chicago Public Schools and Cook County pensions. It also doesn’t include long-term and government-worker health care debt owed by the city, its sister governments and Cook County.

Each of Chicago’s fire and municipal funds now has less than a quarter of the money needed to pay out future benefits. Chicago’s laborers pension system is now only 33 percent funded, down from 64 percent funded in 2014. And the police fund is only a quarter funded.

Donald E. Stephens II, who served the village of Rosemont for more than 43 years, including a long tenure as its public safety superintendent, died Saturday morning, the village announced Sunday.

Stephens, 63, succumbed to a lengthy illness. He was surrounded by his family when he died, according to the village's statement.

"Stephens II was a tireless public servant whose legacy is one of professionalism and loyalty," the statement reads. "His strong leadership and determination will be everlasting in the department and the Village of Rosemont."

Stephens, son of founding Rosemont Mayor Donald E. Stephens, began working for the village in 1971, and was instrumental in the opening of the Rosemont Horizon, now known as the Allstate Arena, as well as the village's convention center and other municipal buildings and projects. Besides serving as public safety superintendent, he had a short stint as deputy mayor in the late 1980s under his father.

Since his father's passing, Stephens' son, Christopher Stephens, said the family has received messages of love and support from friends and community members.

"'He's one of the good guys.' 'He's always fair.' 'He looked out for us and was the voice of reason,'" Christopher Stephens said in describing the messages. "I've heard all those things multiple times. He was a great man."

Donald Stephens II received the Rosemont Public Safety Department's Life Saving Medal and Medal of Merit in 1979. He also was one of the charter members of the department's K-9 unit and served as a police dog handler for several years.

The third superintendent of public safety in the village's history, Stephens retired in 2014, but remained active within the department as the chairman of the Police and Fire Commission.

Donald E. Stephens III, Stephens' son and successor as superintendent, said his father taught him many valuable lessons about loyalty and leadership.

"The thing that stuck out to me the most is, 'Don't ask somebody to do something that you wouldn't be willing to do.' That was instilled in me from Day 1," he said. "That speaks volumes for his character. It goes back to how you treat people -- treat people the way you want to be treated -- and I think that's really the biggest take-away."

Donald Stephens II is also survived by his wife, Kathy, and daughter, Brittany. as well as four grandchildren, his mother, two brothers and one sister. Village of Rosemont Mayor Brad Stephens is his younger brother.

"We're all very proud of him," Donald Stephens III said. "He'll be badly missed."

Services will begin for family only at 9 a.m. Wednesday, at Our Lady of Hope Church in Rosemont. They will be open to the public starting at 10 a.m.
