"Some two million people (including thousands of displaced Syrians) live in relative safety in the west, while over 250,000 live in the east, which has been subjected to years of indiscriminate aerial bombardment by the government’s barrel bombs and, since last year, Russian airstrikes."  Somebody needs to inform her that her rebels have bombarded indiscriminately (with Cannons of Hell among other) the neighborhoods in the West, and sent car bombs there as well.  Somebody needs to tell her that the rebels attempted to deny water and electricity from the Western sector.  Why can't we have writers who condemn killing by both sides in the ugly Syrian war?

If Arendt would find out the vulgarization of her term "banality of evil" and its distortion, she would be horrified.  Anyone who wants to sound deep now throws the term.  My favorite comical use was the US occupation spokesperson in Baghdad, Dan Senor: when Saddam was captured, I remember Senor coming to the microphone and failing to say anything eloquent or profound he went like this: this, ehhhh, was ehhhh, about...Saddamehhhh banality of....ehhhhh evil.  And he then smile feeling satisfaction.

The rise of the use of social media among Arab youth have created a new freedom: the right to mock and satire Sunni and Shi`ite and Christian clerics and priests.  Those merchants of religion have been protected by the regime from any public criticisms but the use of social media created a new avenue.  Some of those clerics, like the Lebanese reactionary Shi`ite cleric, Sami Khadr, are fighting back on social media and responding to the widespread attacks and mockery.
