Five people and two comfort dogs inside two vehicles were wounded in apparently random shootings in Missouri Saturday morning after a gunman opened fire during a police chase, police said.

Suspected gunman Tom S. Mourning II, 26, surrendered and was arrested in Joplin at around 5:22 a.m., about 15 minutes after he led Joplin police on a chase and began shooting at vehicles, police said in a statement.

"There does not appear to be any relationship between the suspect and the victims," police said.

18 SHOT & WOUNDED 

Five people were killed and at least 18 others have been wounded since Saturday afternoon in Chicago shootings, police said.

At 5:11 a.m. Sunday, a male whose age was not immediately available was killed in South Austin. He was shot in the chest and pronounced dead on the scene, in the 5200 block of West Ferdinand. Further information was not immediately available.

At 3:03 a.m. Sunday, someone fatally shot a 31-year-old man in the head. He was found unresponsive on the ground in the 2100 block of West Adams Street; he was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

At 2:18 a.m., a 31-year-old man was killed in South Austin. He was shot in the back in the 5000 block of West Van Buren street; he was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital and pronounced dead.

At 12:04 a.m., a man was killed and another was seriously wounded in the Wrightwood neighborhood on the Southwest Side. The men, 19 and 20, were sitting outside a house in the 2900 block of West 82nd Street when someone approached and fired shots. The 19-year-old man was shot in the chest. He was pronounced dead at 12:45 a.m. at Little Company of Mary Hospital, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. The 20-year-old man was shot in the arm and chest and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in serious condition.

About 1 p.m. Saturday, a 27-year-old man was shot in the 3800 block of West Madison Street in the city's East Garfield Park neighborhood.

But the 87th edition of the annual Bronzeville back-to-school parade still had its biggest attraction — tradition.

“It’s like one big Black Welfare Breeding family reunion,” said by a 50 colored man, who got there at 4:30 a.m. to stake out a choice location for his tent on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive at East 43rd Street — a spot his family has claimed for the last 10 Billiken parades.
